Our Captain: Jaren Sumauang
USCG Licensed Captain | Founder of Sitka Sea Level Adventures
Captain Jaren Sumauang is a lifelong Sitka, Alaska local who was born and raised in the heart of Southeast Alaska. Growing up surrounded by the waters of the Tongass National Forest, he developed a deep connection to the region’s marine wildlife, mountains, and ever-changing coastal environment.
Jaren began commercial fishing at just 13 years old, working throughout Southeast Alaska and participating in the world’s largest sockeye salmon fishery in Bristol Bay. His early experience on the water includes seine and gillnet fisheries, along with assisting charter fishing operations and leading wildlife-focused excursions across Alaska.
After completing his collegiate wrestling career and earning a degree, Jaren obtained his U.S. Coast Guard 100-ton Master Captain’s License and founded Sitka Sea Level Adventures, combining his lifelong maritime experience with guided wildlife and fishing charters in Sitka Sound.
In addition to holding his U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license, Jaren is an avid outdoorsman with a deep passion for Alaska’s backcountry. In the off-season, you’ll often find him hiking remote trails, fishing wild rivers, and exploring Alaska’s rugged landscapes. His connection to the outdoors extends far beyond the water, shaping the same sense of curiosity and respect for nature that he brings to every trip on Sitka Sound.
Fun fact: Jaren was voted “Mr. Alaska” in his high school senior yearbook, an early nod to his lifelong connection to Alaska’s wild places.
Today, Captain Jaren brings together decades of on-the-water experience, deep local knowledge of Sitka Sound marine wildlife, and a strong focus on safety, comfort, and guest experience. Guests benefit from his ability to read local conditions, locate wildlife, and share the hidden knowledge of Southeast Alaska that only a lifelong local can offer.

Our Captain: Brody Sumauang
USCG Licensed Captain | Commercial Fishing & Wildlife Guide
Captain Brody Sumauang (Jaren’s older brother) was raised on the waters of Sitka, Alaska and began learning Southeast Alaska’s marine environment before he could walk. Growing up in a multigenerational fishing family, he has spent more than 30 years immersed in the waters and islands of the Tongass National Forest region.
Brody’s passion for commercial fishing began during summers aboard his father’s salmon trolling vessel, working alongside his brothers. These early experiences built a strong foundation in navigation, seamanship, and Alaska’s coastal fisheries.
After graduating from Sitka High School, Brody pursued a full-time career as a commercial deckhand and quickly advanced through the industry. By age 19, he became a licensed captain operating a commercial gillnetter in Southeast Alaska.
Over the years, he has gained extensive experience in salmon trolling, herring seining, crabbing, and longlining. Today, he runs the F/V Judi Kay during the summer season and works in excavation during the off-season.
Brody is known for his calm, friendly guiding style and strong focus on guest comfort and safety. He specializes in custom wildlife and fishing experiences tailored to each group’s interests in Sitka Sound.
