Visiting Sitka on a Cruise?
Our 2-hour whale watching and wildlife tour is designed to fit comfortably into a Sitka cruise port day. We depart from downtown Sitka near the cruise shuttle drop-off, making it easy to get from your ship to your shore excursion. You can spend two hours on the water and still have time before or after your tour to explore downtown Sitka.
Worried about not booking through the cruise line? We have a Back-to-Ship promise. If you miss your ship due to our tour being late, we will fly you to your next port of call. But don’t worry, this has never happened on our watch and we plan all tours to be back to shore 30 minutes prior to the final cruise ship shuttle departure.

HOW THE TRIP RUNS
Your 2 hours on the Water
1. Check in at the dock.
Arrive 15 minutes early to the Shuttle Bus Drop off in downtown Sitka to check in and meet your captain.
2. Safety briefing & departure
A quick safety walkthrough, then we head out into Sitka Sound.
3. Whale Watching & Wildlife Viewing
Most of the trip is spent slowly cruising known feeding areas, watching and photographing whales.
4. Return to harbor
Back at the dock in about 2 hours, with time for photos and questions.
What to Expect on the 2-Hour Whale Watching & Wildlife Tour
Your 2-hour whale watching tour takes you into Sitka Sound, where the Pacific Ocean meets the islands and rainforest of Southeast Alaska.
Depending on wildlife activity and conditions, we may explore sheltered bays, beaches, islands, and more open coastal waters. On clear days, you may see Mount Edgecumbe, Sitka's iconic volcano, rising beyond the Sound. You may also pass working fishing boats and commercial fishing grounds—because this isn't a staged wildlife experience. This is a real Alaska fishing community, and these are our home waters.
Along the way, keep watch for:
Humpback whales — Sitka Sound's most common whale sighting
Gray whales — especially during their seasonal migration April - May
Orcas — occasional visitors to Sitka Sound
Sea otters — often seen rafting in protected waters
Steller sea lions — hauled out on rocks and buoys

Puffins and seabirds — especially around offshore islands peaking in June
Harbor seals and porpoises
Coastal brown bears — possible along shore all summer, but very active late August and September
No two trips are alike, and wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. That's part of what makes wildlife watching different from visiting a zoo: we're going out to find wild animals where they live.

Are whales guaranteed on a Sitka whale watching tour?
No. Whales are wild animals, so no responsible tour operator can guarantee a sighting. That said, we see whales on approximately 99% of our marine wildlife tours. Our local captains spend hundreds of days on the waters around Sitka and use their knowledge of seasonal patterns, weather, tides, and feeding areas to give you the best possible opportunity to find wildlife.
Even on the rare trip when whales aren't present, Sitka Sound is home to sea otters, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, bald eagles, seabirds, and other wildlife.
What whales can I see in Sitka?
Humpback whales are the most commonly encountered whales on our Sitka tours. Depending on the season and conditions, you may also see gray whales, orcas, and occasionally other whale species like minke.

What other wildlife can I see on a Sitka whale watching tour?
Whales are only part of the experience. Depending on the season and where wildlife is active, you may see sea otters, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, bald eagles, puffins, other seabirds, porpoises, or coastal brown bears along the shoreline.
Every trip is different because we're following wildlife in its natural environment rather than visiting a fixed attraction.
What is the best time of year for whale watching in Sitka?
There isn't one single best month—each season offers something different.
March and April are particularly exciting for herring spawn, gray whale migration, and humpback bubble-net feeding. July and August can bring abundant humpback activity, sea otter pups, seabirds, and generally calmer summer conditions. Late summer and fall can also offer opportunities to see coastal brown bears feeding near shore.

Our signature whale watching and wildlife tour is 2 hours, with multiple departures throughout the day. It's long enough to spend meaningful time searching for and watching wildlife while still fitting comfortably into most Sitka itineraries.

Is the 2-hour whale watching tour good for cruise ship passengers?
Yes. Our 2-hour Sitka whale watching tour is designed to fit comfortably into most cruise ship port days.
We depart from Crescent Harbor in downtown Sitka, directly adjacent to the main cruise shuttle drop-off area, making it easy to get from your ship to our departure point. After your tour, you'll return to the same area with time to explore downtown Sitka before heading back to your ship.
Where does the whale watching tour depart from?
Our whale watching tours depart from Crescent Harbor in downtown Sitka, next to the main cruise shuttle drop-off. We recommend arriving 15 minutes before your scheduled departure. Your confirmation will include the exact meeting instructions.
How many people are on each whale watching boat?
We operate 2-3 boats, with whale watching groups ranging from 6 to 18 guests depending on the departure.
Our smaller boats accommodate up to 6 guests, while our larger vessel accommodates up to 18. We intentionally keep our groups small enough for a more personal experience, easy conversation with your captain, and good wildlife viewing from both the cabin and open decks.
Are children welcome on the whale watching tour?
Absolutely. Our Sitka whale watching tours are family friendly and welcome children of all ages.
Our captains are parents themselves and understand how to make the experience comfortable, engaging, and exciting for young travelers. We provide properly fitted life jackets, and there is plenty to discover beyond whales—from sea otters and sea lions to bald eagles and seabirds.
What should I wear for whale watching in Sitka?
Dress for Southeast Alaska weather and plan on layers. We recommend a warm insulating layer, waterproof outer layer, comfortable pants, and closed-toe shoes with good traction.
Sitka is a temperate rainforest, so rain is always possible (and probable). Our boats have heated, enclosed cabins where you can warm up while still enjoying views of Sitka Sound, along with open-air decks for wildlife viewing.
What happens if it rains?
We go whale watching in the rain. Rain is a normal part of life in Sitka, and wildlife doesn't stop being active because of the weather.
Humpback whales, sea otters, sea lions, eagles, and other wildlife can all be active on rainy days. Clouds and rain may change the mountain views, but they can also create the misty, dramatic scenery Southeast Alaska is known for.
Your comfort matters, which is why our boats have heated, enclosed cabins as well as outdoor viewing areas.
Will I get seasick on a Sitka whale watching tour?
Most guests have a comfortable experience, but anyone prone to motion sickness should prepare for the possibility of rougher water.
If you're concerned about seasickness, consider taking an over-the-counter motion-sickness medication such as Dramamine before your trip, following the product directions or your healthcare provider's advice. Let your captain know if you're feeling uncomfortable—we can often adjust our route to spend more time in calmer, protected waters when conditions allow.

Do you see bears on your whale watching tours?
Coastal brown bears are occasionally spotted along the shoreline, particularly during late summer and fall when salmon are spawning.
Bear sightings are never guaranteed, but our local captains keep an eye on the shoreline whenever conditions and wildlife activity make it possible. Seeing a bear from the boat is a special bonus to an already wildlife-rich day on Sitka Sound.
Is whale watching in Sitka good for people who aren't experienced boaters?
Yes. You don't need any boating or wildlife-watching experience to join us. Your captain handles the boat and navigation while sharing information about Sitka Sound, the wildlife, and the places you're exploring.
Our goal is to make the experience easy: show up, get comfortable, look around, and let us take you into the wild waters around Sitka.
What if we want more than two hours on the water?
If two hours isn't enough, we can create a private or custom Sitka boat tour tailored to your interests.
